Changes to the BCNS Board of Directors: Testimonial to our Departing Directors & Welcoming New Board Directors

BCNS Board Directors Georgia Austin, Jeffrey Bland, and Jonathan Emord have stepped down as of year’s end. We thank them for their many contributions and years of service. These inspirational leaders have been a crucial part of the development and growth of the BCNS and the nutrition profession.

Georgia Austin
Georgia is a CNS, serving the Central NY area through her practice, New Leaf Functional Nutrition. She served for two years as an adjunct faculty at New York Chiropractic College’s Masters of Science Applied Clinical Nutrition program, located in Seneca Falls, NY, where she also earned her MS degree in 2008. Georgia served for four years as the BCNS Board Secretary and was the board representative for the Quality Assurance committee.

“Thank you to Georgia, for the wisdom and dedication she brought as a leader of the BCNS.  Her leadership and support have helped evolve the BCNS into the pre-eminent certifier of advanced nutrition professionals.” Michael Stroka, CEO of the ANA.

Jeff Bland
Jeff Bland, Ph.D., FACN, CNS, served on the BCNS board for ten years, ushering in an era of growth and development of the BCNS and the entire personalized nutrition and personalized medicine fields. He played a crucial part in the evolution of the BCNS and its coherence with the American Nutrition Association. Jeff co-founded The Institute for Functional Medicine with his wife, Susan, in 1991 and, more recently, the Personalized Lifestyle Medicine Institute and Big Bold Health.

Michael Stroka, CEO of the ANA, reflects on Jeff’s vision: “Thank you Jeff, for your service as an instrumental leader of the ANA Family of organizations, in your role as BCNS Board Member and Vice President. As a Board Member and a CNS, you have been a tremendous Champion for the BCNS work and a key architect envisioning the American Nutrition Association.  Your fellow ANA leaders and community of nutrition professionals deeply appreciate the time and talents you have long contributed, and will no doubt continue to contribute to the mission.”

Jonathan Emord
Jonathan Emord, JD concluded his final term on the BCNS Board, serving as the public member since 2010. Jonathan has been practicing constitutional and administrative law before the federal courts and agencies since 1985. Emord & Associates represents over 450 different food, dietary supplement, over-the-counter and compounded drug, medical device and biologics companies on issues of regulatory compliance, claims and advertising, and agency investigations and enforcement. Jonathan has either served as lead counsel or has been involved in dozens of major legal battles involving federal government attempts to restrict what may be said on the label or in the labeling and advertising of foods and dietary supplements over the past two decades.
President Ronald Hoffman said at the December BCNS Board of Directors meeting, “Jonathan is much more than a public member—he lent his expert counsel to the BCNS in so many areas over the past twelve years.
Michael Stroka celebrates Jonathan’s impact: “We are more grateful than you can imagine for Jonathon’s important contributions to the ANA mission and to human health.  BCNS and the ANA have benefitted tremendously from his wisdom and counsel and contributions (and humor!!). It is an honor to have been side by side with him in the work to elevate nutrition to the core of health care.”

We are very pleased to welcome two new directors to the BCNS, Crystal Gossard, DCN, CNS, LDN and Mary Leopold.

Crystal Gossard
Dr. Gossard, is an Educational Specialist and Spokesperson and maintains a private clinical practice. A long-time member of the ANA family of organizations, she has co-authored peer-reviewed publications and will continue service on the CNS Exam Development Council where she has served since 2020.

Mary Lepold
Mary was elected to the BCNS board as the public member. She worked as a pharmacist in California for more than twenty years before transitioning to Leopold Ice Cream, a family business started in 1919. In 2004, Mary opened the flagship Leopold Ice Cream store in Savannah, Georgia which was rated as the #1 place to get ice cream in the city by Travel and Leisure magazine.

Staff Changes
In 2022, Debbie Slutzky stepped down from her role as the manager of certifications.  We are grateful for her seven years of work with the organization.

ANA Senior Vice President of Nutrition Programs, Corinne Bush notes, “I’ve been privileged to collaborate closely with Debbie. She’s the quintessential professional who has brought both structure AND function to the Certifications department.

Amy Smith, MS, CNS, LDN, is now the ANA manager of certifications.  Amy has been with the ANA since February 2021 and has made great strides in the Certifications department in the six short months that she has been in this role with a special focus on processes. Megan Rufael, MS, CNS, LDN, was brought onto the certifications team as the Certification Coordinator in October 2022. Both Amy and Megan are passionate about the field of personalized nutrition and their contributions to the growth of the CNS and all of our certifications.

CNS Connect
CNS® Connect is THE community space for CNSs to find, share, learn and CONNECT. This important initiative empowers CNSs and provides tools and information for them to practice successfully. In 2022, CNS Connect offered over a dozen webinars focused on helping CNSs and CNS Candidates build their practice, and four networking events were offered to build community, referral networks, and support. We had a fantastic time in San Diego at the Annual CNS Connect Happy Hour, enjoying cocktails and a sunset poolside.

Advocacy
The ANA Advocacy Team continues to make inroads in many areas that affect CNSs practice rights. In 2022, the ANA, here are the highlights:

  • Represented ANA in Washington, DC at the historic White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health and at the USDA’s first ever Come to the Table event at USDA headquarters.
  • In conjunction with the White House Conference, ANA staff met with members of Congress to:
  • Encourage them to support Medicare medical nutrition therapy (MNT) expansion bills.
  • Thank them for supporting legislation to convene the White House conference.
  • Participated in rules and regulations processes in North Carolina, North Dakota, and Washington, DC.
  • Advocated for CNS-inclusive state legislation and regulations in Florida, Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Washington, DC, and Wisconsin. These efforts contributed to victories in multiple states in 2022, including:
  • Successfully advocated for a bill to extend the nutrition/dietetics practice act in Illinois for another five years (through Jan. 1, 2028).
  • Supported expanded nutrition practice exemptions for nutrition practitioners who are not eligible for licensure in Mississippi.
  • Participated in multiple coalitions advocating for reasonable occupational regulations reform, appropriate practice privileges for health care providers, and integrative health care, including nutrition.
  • Sent letters of support for a variety of state and federal initiatives pertaining to nutrition and improving access to nutrition services, particularly medical nutrition therapy, food as medicine, and medically tailored meals.
  • Advocated for more CNSs on state regulatory boards and other entities where policy decisions are being made.
  • Supported CNSs in state licensure application processes, including recruiting CNS volunteers to serve as mentors for licensure applicants in Florida and North Carolina.
  • Worked with the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics to update the Occupational Outlook Handbook regarding dietitians and nutritionists.
  • Advocated for fair implementation of in-place licensing laws.

The ANA Advocacy Team looks forward to continuing this important work in 2023. For questions or to get involved, please contact advocacy@theana.org.

SAN DIEGO, CA Oct. 26, 2022 – The American Nutrition Association (ANA) is proud to announce its commitment to award 100 nutrition training scholarships to licensed health care providers in rural and underserved areas.  Consistent with the Biden-Harris Administration’s recently announced goal of ending hunger and reducing diet-related disease by 2030, the American Nutrition Association’s allocation of these scholarships for their Personalized Nutrition Practitioner (PNP) Training and Certification will equip scholarship recipients with the skills and knowledge to apply personalized nutrition in practice to address diet-related diseases and conditions.

This announcement follows the American Nutrition Association’s participation at the historic White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health last month. Concurrent with the conference, the Biden Administration released a comprehensive national strategy to end hunger and reduce diet-related disease by 2030, while reducing health disparities. The plan centers on five pillars:

  1.     Improve food access and affordability.
  2.     Integrate nutrition and health.
  3.     Empower all consumers to make and have access to healthy choices.
  4.     Support physical activity for all.
  5.     Enhance nutrition and food security research.

To support Pillar 2, integrating nutrition and health, the American Nutrition Association commits to awarding 100 Personalized Nutrition Practitioner training and certification program scholarships, 20 per year from 2023-2027, to licensed health care providers, particularly primary care providers practicing in communities of color, rural areas, and other underserved communities.

The ANA’s Personalized Nutrition Practitioner Training Program and Certification is a concise, clinically focused education program designed to equip licensed healthcare practitioners with the skills and knowledge to apply personalized nutrition in practice. After completing the program, practitioners are able to:

  •     Understand and apply the personalized nutrition care model in clinical practice to optimize health and support chronic disease prevention and management;
  •     Communicate effectively with patients about the role of nutrition in their health or disease; and
  •     Collaborate with a multidisciplinary healthcare team and identify patients and clients for referral to a personalized nutrition professional.

The ANA is pleased to make this commitment to integrating nutrition and health and moving nutrition to the core of health care.

About the American Nutrition Association

The American Nutrition Association is a 501c3 nonprofit that educates and certifies professionals to use nutrition in practice, advocates for full-scale integration of science-based nutrition in public policy, and supports all healthcare providers’ ability to legally practice nutrition to the level of their training. The ANA’s work is aligned with several pillars, particularly Pillar 2, which aims to “prioritize the role of nutrition and food security in overall health—including disease prevention and management—and ensure that our health care system addresses the nutrition needs of all people.”

In Memoriam: Stephen Sinatra, MD, CNS

The American Nutrition Association mourns the loss of our dear family member, Dr. Stephen Sinatra.  Dr. Sinatra was a renowned physician who truly integrated heart and mind.  Over his decorated career, Dr. Sinatra inspired hope for hundreds of thousands of people through his passionate work in cardiology, nutrition, and mind-body therapies. He spoke frequently about the healing power of maintaining a positive outlook—and the importance of practicing gratitude. We are incredibly grateful to have had the chance to work with and learn from such an inspirational man, and we are so thankful for the opportunity to continue his mission in the years ahead.

Dr. Sinatra’s Legacy

As a board-certified cardiologist, certified bioenergetic psychotherapist, and Certified Nutrition Specialist, Dr. Sinatra lectured and facilitated workshops worldwide and authored several publications and medical periodicals. He fostered an understanding and utilization of natural compounds like Co-Q10, carnitine, and ribose.

Dr. Sinatra was a very important voice and long time leader of the American Nutrition Association, serving on the American College of Nutrition board and most recently, the Scientific Advisory Board.

Since opening his own private practice in Manchester, CT in 1977, Dr. Sinatra became well-known for his integration of conventional medicine with complementary nutritional and psychological therapies that help heal the heart. A fellow in the American College of Cardiology and the American College of Nutrition, Dr. Sinatra served two four-year terms as the Chief of Cardiology at Manchester Memorial Hospital, where he had previously been Director of Medical Education for 18 years.

After a ten-year study of bioenergetic psychotherapy, Dr. Sinatra began co-facilitating psychotherapy workshops for his patients and gathering data with before-and-after blood pressure measurements and urine samples to measure stress hormones. As another early hallmark of his practice, he began using coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) to help treat a wide range of cardiac concerns several years before the conventional medical world would embrace this nutrient. It was during this time that Dr. Sinatra saw first-hand the important contribution that the supplemental use of energy-supplying nutrients, especially CoQ10, made in the lives of his patients. The ANA joins with all of those he touched in remembering Dr. Sinatra

Chicago, IL, September 21, 2021 – The American Nutrition Association (ANA) will induct George Brewer, MD, MACN and Ananda Prasad, MD, PhD, MACN into the Nutrition Hall of Fame® at the 62nd Annual Personalized Nutrition 2021: Mapping the Future on September 28, 2021, in the company of their peers, colleagues and nutrition professionals around the world.

“Dr. Brewer is a giant in the field of nutrition, having done groundbreaking research and applied science in the understanding of the vital role of copper levels in human health. Dr. Prasad has helped saved the lives of millions of children around the world through his seminal work on the role of zinc in pediatric diarrhea” said Michael Stroka, JD, MS, CNS, LDN, CEO of the ANA. “We owe much of our understanding of zinc’s crucial role in health to Dr. Prasad and those who have followed him. It is a deep honor to induct Dr. Prasad and Dr. Brewer into the highest honor in nutrition: the Nutrition Hall of Fame.”

Inductees to the American Nutrition Association’s Nutrition Hall of Fame are selected based on their monumental achievements in the field of nutrition.

Dr. Brewer served as President of the ANA (then known as American College of Nutrition) from 1996-97. He received the ACN Award for Distinction for Outstanding Research in Nutrition in 1989, and the ACN Mastership Award in 1999. Other awards throughout his career include: a USPHS Career Development Award, 1965-70, Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Chicago in 1976, a Certificate of Appreciation from the Wilson’s Disease Association in 1983, a Raulin Award from the International Society for Trace Element Research in Humans in 1998, a Sellner Professorship of Human Genetics from the University of Michigan in 2000, and a Honorary Degree, Doctor of Science, Purdue University, 2004. He is a fellow of the Morris Animal Foundation and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Dr. Brewer received his medical degree from the University of Chicago and is the Sellner Emeritus professor of human genetics and Emeritus professor of internal medicine of the University of Michigan Medical School. He is also currently co-director of Vetgen Laboratories and co-director of Cypris LLC.

Dr. Prasad’s pioneering studies from the Middle East in the early sixties established for the first time the essentiality of zinc for human nutrition and showed that its deficiency occurred in humans. The impacts of this discovery include establishment of RDA for zinc in 1974, mandatory inclusion of zinc in TPN fluids in 1978 resulting in saving of many lives, its use in children with acute diarrhea decreasing the mortality and its use in the elderly with age related macular degeneration for prevention of blindness.

Dr. Prasad is author of twelve books and over three hundred scientific articles. Several of his papers have been cited as citation classics. One paper was republished as nutrition classic and another as landmark article. In 2011, he received a prestigious Mahidol Award from Thailand for his contributions in the field of zinc metabolism and an award from ACP for outstanding research in Medicine in 2007.

Dr. Prasad, a past President of the ANA (then known as American College of Nutrition) has been at Wayne State University since 1963 when he took a position as director of the division of Hematology, a post he held until 1984, when he became the director of the division of research. Dr. Prasad has also been a professor of medicine at Wayne from 1968 until the present. He was appointed as distinguished professor of medicine, Division of Hematology– Oncology in 2000.

The ANA Mourns the Loss of Director Stanley J. Dudrick, MD, FACS, FACN, CNS

  • Jul 6, 2020
Dr. Stanley Dudrick

Dr. Stanley DudrickIt is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Dr. Stanley Dudrick, one of the most influential physicians in the world. Dr. Dudrick invented the intravenous feeding method known as total parenteral nutrition — credited with saving millions of lives — while a surgical resident at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia. His groundbreaking research in the efficacy of intravenous feeding is recognized as one of the three most important advances in modern surgery.

Throughout his long and inspirational life, Dr. Dudrick received more than 100 national and international honors and awards including the American College of Nutrition Goldsmith Award, the AMA Joseph B. Goldberger Award in Clinical Nutrition; the AMA Brookdale Award in Medicine; the Ladd Medal of the American Academy of Pediatrics;  and the American Surgical Association’s First Flance/Karl Award in 1997 for his seminal and lifetime scientific contributions to surgery; and the American College of Surgeons Jacobsen Innovation Award in 2005.

A native of Pennsylvania, he graduated from Franklin and Marshall College with a B.S. degree in Biology with honors in 1957 and received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1961. After completing a rotating internship and residency training in general surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Dudrick joined the faculty at U Penn and rose in rank from Instructor to Professor of Surgery within five years.

His distinguished academic career spanned more than 40 years, including his selection as the first Professor and Founding Chairman of the Department of Surgery at the then new University of Texas Medical School at Houston. He went on to chair the departments of surgery at the University of Pennsylvania; at Saint Mary’s Hospital, a Yale teaching hospital; and at Bridgeport Hospital/Yale New Haven Health System. He also served as Professor of Surgery at Yale University School of Medicine; and Adjunct Clinical Professor of Surgery of Quinnipiac College, Bridgeport Hospital/Yale New Haven Health System. In 2007, Dr. Dudrick was named — and remained active for a number of years — as Chairman Emeritus, Department of Surgery and Director Emeritus of the Program in Surgery at Saint Mary’s Hospital and at Yale. Dr. Dudrick  also served as the Director of the Physician Assistant Program at Misericordia University as well as Professor of Surgery at the Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine.

Dr. Dudrick was a treasured colleague and friend to us as a Fellow of the American College of Nutrition (FACN) and an esteemed board member of the Board for Certification of Nutrition Specialists (BCNS) from 2008 until his death. He will be greatly missed by our community. Dr. Jeffrey Blumberg, Chair of ANA and President of BCNS writes, “For those of us who worked with Stan, we knew that the greatness of his scientific accomplishments were equally matched by the generosity of his heart.”

The following tribute is written by Stan’s great friend and colleague over many years, past BCNS President, Dr. Sid Stohs:

The world has lost an individual who spent his life working for the good of man-kind and trying to make a positive difference. Dr. Stan Dudrick was an accomplished surgeon, scientist, scholar, colleague and dear friend. On one occasion I asked him when he was going to retire and he answered “about five years after I die”.  This mindset exemplifies his goal to continue to search for knowledge, improve health and health outcomes, and make the world a better place.

He served on numerous boards and committees, and gave freely of his time, knowledge and skills. I personally served on a number of committees and boards with Dr. Dudrick, and always looked forward to his erudite input.  He received numerous honors and awards which he never flaunted. He was humble, outgoing and caring. His interpersonal skills and bedside manner are legendary.

Numerous individuals can relate instances where he freely gave advice and suggestions that resolved health issues and improved and extended life. I can personally relate an example. A personal friend of ours had undergone two botched intestinal surgery procedures outside the country while living abroad and was experiencing serious complications therefrom. I asked Dr. Dudrick whether he would be willing to see this distinguished individual. Dr. Dudrick with one of his former students conducted an assessment, had the patient admitted to the hospital where Dr. Dudrick had been head of surgery, supervised the surgery, and had this individual and his wife stay in his home until he recovered sufficiently to travel. One could not ask more of a friend and colleague.

I should also note that Dr. Dudrick achieved his successes with the assistance, love, companionship, daily support and advice of his wife Theresa. Throughout their marriage she remained the perfect complement and organizer in their lives. She is most accomplished in her own right.

Let it be noted that Dr. Dudrick relished his Polish heritage, visiting the homeland of his ancestors many times, and being honored by them, including the naming of a hospital after him. I was privileged to have spoken with him the week before he died, and my wife Edie and I were honored to have been able to spend a few days with them in their home in the fall. Stan, we miss you and the world will miss you, but your contributions will keep on living and giving.

—Sid Stohs, Ph.D., FACN, CNSE, ATS, FAPHA
